{"id":1166,"date":"2011-02-19T22:37:32","date_gmt":"2011-02-20T02:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2011-02-19T22:38:29","modified_gmt":"2011-02-20T02:38:29","slug":"detroit-symphony-shutters-its-doors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=1166","title":{"rendered":"Detroit Symphony Shutters Its Doors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20110219\/ENT01\/102190393\/DSO-suspends-season-as-striking-musicians-turn-down-%E2%80%98final-offer%E2%80%99\">writing was on the wall<\/a> for that one. \u00a0I really hope the New York City Opera doesn&#8217;t follow them down that rabbit hole.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Detroit Symphony Orchestra officials have suspended the rest of the 2010-2011 season, through June 5. \u00a0This comes on the heels of striking DSO musicians voting today to turn down management&#8217;s &#8220;final offer.&#8221; \u00a0Though management&#8217;s press release noted it&#8217;s possible some of the season could yet be salvaged were a settlement reached in the coming months, DSO Executive Vice President Paul Hogle said this afternoon that the current offer is now withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Dave Bing&#8217;s spokesperson Karen Dumas said, &#8220;We are very disappointed with the news, but when you have two parties that are equally committed and passionate, finding common ground can be difficult and sometimes impossible.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are also some more in depth looks in how these final months have played out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20110202\/OPINION01\/102020317\/1008\/Editorial--DSO-numbers-don%E2%80%99t-work\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20110203\/OPINION03\/102030374\/1272\/OPINION0310\/Banks-want-DSO-s-$54M-loan-repaid\">here<\/a>. \u00a0I personally believe this has more to do than just the decline of classical music. \u00a0It&#8217;s a sad story about Detroit and America at large as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, the writing was on the wall for that one.
