{"id":1303,"date":"2012-04-03T00:20:23","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T04:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=1303"},"modified":"2012-04-03T00:20:23","modified_gmt":"2012-04-03T04:20:23","slug":"a-robe-of-orange-flame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=1303","title":{"rendered":"A Robe of Orange Flame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday I went and heard a percussion recital. \u00a0On it I heard perhaps my favorite piece for solo\u00a0thunder-sheet\u00a0ever. \u00a0(That&#8217;s not saying much, it&#8217;s the only one I&#8217;ve heard). \u00a0This piece and another that I recently heard called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/javanese.imslp.info\/files\/imglnks\/usimg\/7\/74\/IMSLP115689-WIMA.ece0-to-the-earth.pdf\">To The \u00a0Earth<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Frederick Rzewski really opened my eyes as to the possibilities of a performer speaking to add to the drama of the work, as well as all the different timbral\/compositional possibilities one has on a single\u00a0thunder-sheet, or in <em>To The Earth&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0case, pitched flower pots. \u00a0The piece I am speaking of (for\u00a0thunder-sheet) is\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/soundcloud.com\/greg-secor\/christoper-deane-a-robe-of\">A Robe of Orange Flame<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>by Christoper Deane. \u00a0It hasn&#8217;t been recorded professionally yet it seems, so it is a real treat to see it live, and its impact is probably much greater that way as well.<\/p>\n<p>The work essentially tells the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thich_Quang_Duc\">Thich Quang Duc&#8217;s self immolation<\/a>, first as a remembrance of the imagery from the composer&#8217;s personal point of view, then as a relation of the a New York Times reporter&#8217;s submission for copy and then finally as a child&#8217;s fable. \u00a0If you have a chance to see either of these pieces I highly\u00a0recommend\u00a0you take it up, they are really cool.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Sunday I went and heard a percussion recital.
