{"id":467,"date":"2009-05-06T08:14:52","date_gmt":"2009-05-06T12:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=467"},"modified":"2014-09-05T11:28:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-05T15:28:34","slug":"quartet-for-the-end-of-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opensourcemusic.org\/?p=467","title":{"rendered":"Quartet for the End of Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s recital season and I have been going to a few in between stints of practicing for my own.\u00a0 At the end of last month, I played in a chamber concert hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/noamfaingold\">Noam Faingold<\/a>, where I played the Prokofiev Quintet.\u00a0 On the end of that concert was a group playing Messiaen&#8217;s Quartet for the End of Time.\u00a0 I had the pleasure of being able to see them play again at one of the member&#8217;s recitals.<\/p>\n<p>To say the least, movement&#8217;s five and eight are absolutely stunning.\u00a0 I had heard the work performed live only once before by members and colleagues of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.music.miami.edu\/bergonzi\/\">Bergonzi String Quartet<\/a>, and being at a young age with (admittedly) less refined tastes, I don&#8217;t remember appreciating the entire work as much.\u00a0 Now, with these new eyes, I see the entire work as profound, and in the right setting (cheerily lit rooms don&#8217;t exactly match the aesthetic of the music) it can floor listeners.<\/p>\n<p>Messiaen said of the last movement that it should be just like &#8220;pure love,&#8221; but if I may engage in a bit of the intentional fallacy here, the fifth movement is more like &#8220;pure love&#8221;.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll go out on a limb and also say that I think <em>love<\/em> is the wrong word to use, the emotional color that Messiaen presents us is indescribable.\u00a0 The reason I like the fifth movement more is because of the tone color of the cello.\u00a0 The cello&#8217;s voice has more core and depth, yet can still get high enough to express stratospheric, heavenly floating (call me a lower voice lover, because I am).<\/p>\n<p><object data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/OJ-GwxyJ2ZY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;border=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"340\" height=\"285\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/OJ-GwxyJ2ZY&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;border=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s so placid and contemplative.<\/p>\n<p>The players handled it wonderfully in both concerts, though I thought the first performance was more inspired, even if less prepared.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s recital season and I have been going to a few in between stints of practicing for my own.
